NCI launches program for molecular characterization of childhood cancers

In support of the reignited Cancer Moonshot’s goal of fostering data sharing in cancer research, the National Cancer Institute has launched the Molecular Characterization Initiative for pediatric tumors (The Cancer Letter, Feb. 4, 2022).

Cristina Puig-Saus, an associate professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics and surgical oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and an investigator at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and her research team have received a five-year, $3.9 million grant from NCI to develop drug-based strategies that could enhance cancer immunotherapy for patients with melanoma and potentially other types of cancer. 
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming biomedical research and healthcare. Large language models, foundation models, and AI agents are increasingly being deployed to assist with data interpretation, literature review, clinical decision support, and translational research. 
How’s this for a paradox: The better cancer centers become at keeping patients alive, the more expensive cancer care becomes. This brutal tradeoff hits harder in rural areas, where the cancer burden is higher and the investigator and clinical trial representation is lower.
