Conversation with the Cancer Letter Caligiuri: It was time for me to hit the refresh button on my career

After 20 years at Ohio State University, Michael Caligiuri is moving on.

Caligiuri was named physician-in-chief of City of Hope and president of City of Hope National Medical Center on Nov. 28. He stepped down as director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and as CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute earlier this month (The Cancer Letter, Nov. 17). 

“For me, it was really time to hit the refresh button in my career,” Caligiuri said to The Cancer Letter. “I’m leaving it with a very strong balance sheet and have enjoyed tremendous collegial and community support. My job was done, and I realized that rather suddenly. I was ready for a new opportunity.

“One wakes up one day and realizes your job is done and it’s time to seek new opportunity for professional and personal growth.”

Caligiuri spoke with Matthew Ong, a reporter with The Cancer Letter, and Paul Goldberg, editor and publisher of The Cancer Letter.
