In Brief Walter Stadler replaces Susan Cohn as UChicago Dean for Clinical Research; Sonali Smith steps in as interim chief of hem/onc

Susan Cohn has stepped down as the University of Chicago Medicine dean for clinical research in order to focus all her efforts on leading the joint program in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, recently established with Advocate Health Care and NorthShore University Health System.

She will be succeeded by Walter Stadler, chief of the Section of Hematology/Oncology, who also served as associate dean for clinical research from 2007-2014.

Stadler, the Fred C. Buffet Professor of Medicine, has served on the Department of Medicine faculty for 25 years.

Sonali Smith, currently the director of the adult Lymphoma Program has agreed to serve as interim chief for Section of Hematology/Oncology.  Smith, the Elwood V. Jensen Professor, is an expert in lymphoma therapeutics who has worked at the Department of Medicine for nearly 20 years. 

Smith is vice-chair of the Southwest Oncology Group Lymphoma Committee. She serves as chair of the Career Development and Engagement Subcommittee for the American Society of Oncology and chairs the Women’s Networking Center for ASCO’s annual meeting.
