UIC, Northwestern, Moffitt researchers awarded $1.2M DOD grant for prostate cancer research

The U.S. Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program has awarded the Data Science Award and a $1.2 million grant to researchers Charles Gaber, Natalie Reizine, Todd Lee, Lucia Petito, and Jessica Islam.

In a video captioned “The High-T Department of War” and posted on X, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that he was authorizing a screening program for troops to ensure “you have the right testosterone levels to operate at your absolute best.”
A study, which focused on the DNA switches of prostate cancer cells, reveals insights into enhancers that become active during cancer development and turn on genes linked to the disease. The study found that enhancers work cooperatively in 3D networks, rather than as isolated switches. Some enhancers function as “central hubs” that control many genes, while others play a supporting role. These findings could help with the development of targeted cancer therapies.
A growing number of prostate cancer experts argue that calling the lowest-risk prostate cancer “cancer” does more harm than good. A UCLA-led study found removing the cancer label could dramatically reduce overtreatment and encourage more men to get screened, potentially leading to significantly fewer deaths from aggressive prostate cancer.
Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center have published a case study highlighting the potential optimization of the TAMP, or trans-arterial micro-perfusion, procedure with RenovoCath to deliver intra-arterial gemcitabine (a commonly used chemotherapy) directly near a tumor (rather than traditional systemic IV administration) in a patient with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. 
Adding the investigational adenoviral-based viral immunotherapy aglatimagene besadenovec (alglatimagene, CAN-2409) to standard radiation therapy improved disease-free survival for patients with intermediate- or high-risk localized prostate cancer, according to the results of a multicenter clinical trial led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, Department of Radiation Oncology and Molecular Radiation Sciences, and Brady Urological Institute.
