Research!America to honor chair emeritus John Edward Porter and medical and health research advocacy leaders

Research!America’s 22nd annual Advocacy Awards will pay a tribute to John Edward Porter, Research!America chair emeritus, for his decades-long commitment to advancing medical and health research. Porter served as a House member representing the 10th district in Illinois from 1980 to 2001, during which time he chaired the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, HHS, Education, and Related Agencies.

The U.S. House of Representatives Jan. 22 passed a three-bill minibus package that is expected to be the grand finale of the drama of the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process. The package, which funds the HHS as well as the departments of Defense, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, and Education, gives NIH and NCI modest raises over FY25, and nullifies several  aggressive cuts the White House had proposed for NIH.
