Digital check-ins improve outcomes for cancer patients, Alliance trial finds

A simple weekly electronic symptom check-in with a care team significantly improves the quality of life for individuals undergoing treatment for advanced cancer, according to the results of a trial led by Alliance Foundation Trials.

An insurance-supported integrative oncology program resulted in clinically meaningful improvements in cancer-related symptoms like pain, stress, anxiety, depression, nausea, and fatigue, according to a study conducted by researchers at University Hospitals Connor Whole Health and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. 
A pilot project reveals that 84% of participants had a positive experience using a newly developed online tool created by the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology called the Participant Engagement Portal. Alliance created PEP to foster direct connection between cancer researchers and the individuals who volunteer for clinical studies. The goal was to make it easier for patients and clinicians to share information, deliver trial updates, and self-report on social risk factors. 
Mina Sedrak, director of the UCLA Center for Cancer and Aging and director of Cancer Control and Survivorship Research at the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Vijaya Raj Bhatt professor and medical director of the Leukemia Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, were selected to serve as co-chairs of the Cancer in the Older Adult Committee for The Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology.
Thyme Care has announced a $97M Series D fundraise from current investors CVS Health Ventures, Foresite Capital, a16z Bio + Health, Concord Health Partners, Town Hall Ventures, AlleyCorp, and Frist Cressey Ventures. New strategic investors include Morgan Health, a division of JPMorganChase focused on employer-sponsored healthcare, as well as Humana, Texas Oncology, and Memorial Hermann Health System, bringing Thyme Care’s total capital raised to $275M.
