Sylvester investigators identify potential targets to overcome treatment resistance in TNBC

Researchers with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and collaborators have shown that immature natural killer cells are present in patients with triple-negative breast cancer and likely promote, instead of inhibit, disease progression in this cancer type.

Marlon L. Wong, associate professor of clinical physical therapy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was awarded a grant from Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. The three-year, $225,000 award will support research focused on improving quality of life for patients living with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and other long-term effects of cancer treatment.
For people at high risk of developing breast cancer, yearly mammograms may not be enough to detect tumors early. To make earlier diagnosis easier, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology team has developed portable detectors based on ultrasound, which could be used much more frequently. The team reports that they have improved the resolution of the images produced by their system, making it easier to spot potential tumors, as well as cysts and microcalcifications.
