Caligiuri resigns as CEO of the James after stepping down as director of OSUCCC

Michael Caligiuri, who over the past 14 years demonstrated virtuosity in recruitment, lobbying, and fundraising, building the third-largest cancer hospital in the U.S., has stepped down as director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and as CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.

The reasons for the change in leadership have not been made public. However, it is clear that it came in two steps:

First, on Nov. 3, Ohio State announced that Caligiuri was stepping down as director of the cancer center, to be succeeded by Raphael Pollock, surgeon-in-chief of the James Cancer Hospital and The Ohio State University Health Care System. At the time, Pollock was named interim director, while Provost Bruce McPheron would initiate a national search for a permanent director.

“Michael has been planning for this transition from the OSUCCC director role and will continue as the CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute,” McPheron said in a Nov. 3 statement.
