Lurie Cancer Center receives $12.6M merit extension from NCI

The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University has received a $12.6 million Merit Extension Award from NCI, one of two Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation to earn the recognition.

The Case Comprehensive Cancer Center was awarded this two-year merit-based extension in late September.

In April 2025, announcements from the two most influential biomedical agencies in the US, the FDA and the NIH, declared that both will seek to reduce and minimize animal-based testing and experimentation. Germline testing has advanced from single-gene Sanger sequencing to parallel sequencing of hundreds of genes, while tumor (somatic) testing has expanded with the rise of targeted therapies based on point mutations, copy number changes and other alterations.
