MD Anderson retains top spot on U.S. News rankings; Johns Hopkins moves up to No. 4

U.S. News & World Report rankings for 2019-20 significantly reshuffled the top 10 best cancer hospitals, with Johns Hopkins, UPMC, Massachusetts General, and Northwestern moving up the list.

The rearrangement did not affect MD Anderson Cancer Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Mayo Clinic, which remained in the top three, respectively.

Cleveland Clinic has been moved to No. 6, and Seattle Cancer Care, University of California, San Francisco, as well as the Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania are now positioned in the top 20.

Some of these changes are likely the result of updates to this year’s methodology for the U.S. News rankings. They include:

Two additional patient-centered measures in each specialty: patient experience score and a new outcome measure that examines how often patients go directly home from the hospital rather than transitioning to a nursing home or other institutional care setting.

An enhanced risk-adjustment model that accounts for differences in patient populations so that hospitals that treat sicker patients are not penalized.

Harmonization of outcome measurement in the specialty rankings with the U.S. News Procedures & Conditions ratings, which debuted in 2015 to evaluate hospitals in nine common services.
