Jon Huntsman, Sr., said he was shocked by the unexpected firing of Mary Beckerle, CEO and director of the cancer center he founded and which his family continues to fund.

Predicting that Beckerle will return to the top job at Huntsman Cancer Institute, Huntsman blasted the two officials who fired her: Vivian Lee, senior vice president for health sciences at the University of Utah, and David Pershing, the university president.

“There are always a few bad apples in every bushel,” Huntsman said. “There are some there who are not honest, ethical. We happen to have a group of them there now—and the governor and the legislature will get rid of them shortly, and we will be on our way. We are upbeat, positive, and ready to go.”

In addition to turning to the legislature, Huntsman said he may be going to court. Four law firms have been asked to pursue legal options.

It was Lee herself who has inadvertently provided the ammunition now being put to use by Huntsman.
