City of Hope has developed and deployed HopeLLM, a proprietary generative AI platform that addresses critical operational challenges in hospitals while advancing personalized cancer care.

Having witnessed firsthand how this technology has transformed our clinical practice, I can attest to its profound impact on patient care, physician satisfaction and research advancement.

Transforming clinical practice and accelerating research

HopeLLM directly tackles the time-intensive process of new patient onboarding — a significant challenge given we processed over 150,000 new patients in 2024 alone. The platform automatically synthesizes complex medical histories spanning 10 to 20 years, converting hundreds of pages of test results, treatment notes and reports into actionable clinical summaries within seconds.

By summarizing massive amounts of information in seconds, HopeLLM removes a barrier between patient and doctor. Rather than sifting through extensive medical histories, as doctors, we can now dedicate more of our time to helping our patients understand their treatment and care options.

Beyond clinical workflows, HopeLLM serves as a research accelerator by extracting real-world data for oncology studies. The platform’s clinical trial matching capabilities represent another significant advancement. HopeLLM will be able to automatically identify patient eligibility for available trials and extract key data points into research-ready formats, transforming what previously required hours of manual chart review into automated processes.

Building on years of AI innovation

Our AI deployment builds on a robust foundation established since 2017 by our Enterprise Technology Group. We have successfully integrated predictive models into clinical workflows that anticipate critical risks including sepsis in vulnerable populations and surgical complications. These models provide risk scores with contextual explanations, supporting responsible AI-driven clinical decision making.

HopeLLM’s deployment across our national clinical network ensures standardized, high-quality care delivery regardless of location. The platform exemplifies a patient-centered approach to AI implementation, shifting administrative burdens away from care teams and enabling more focused, therapeutic conversations between clinicians and patients.

HopeLLM represents a significant step toward operationalizing AI in oncology practice, demonstrating how institutions can leverage proprietary data and expertise to create targeted solutions for complex clinical challenges while maintaining focus on patient outcomes and research advancement.
