FLASH radiation therapy shows promise in first-in-human trial

Researchers recently completed the first human trial of proton FLASH radiotherapy at the Cincinnati Children’s/University of Cincinnati Medical Center Proton Therapy Center. FLASH RT was shown to be as safe and appeared to be as effective as conventional radiation without causing unexpected side effects in the study in a small number of people with bone cancer.

According to preliminary data from a multi-institution phase III trial led by researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center, intensity modulated proton therapy achieved similar clinical outcomes and offered significant patient benefits when compared to traditional intensity modulated radiation therapy as part of chemoradiation treatment for patients with oropharyngeal cancer.
