Peng Mao, assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Molecular Medicine at UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, was awarded a NCI grant totaling $1.6 million over five years for research into the “Mechanism of Transcription-coupled DNA Repair and its Impact on Cancer Mutations.”

Ishwaria Subbiah was named executive director of cancer care equity and professional wellness at Sarah Cannon Research Institute. In this role, Subbiah will focus on reducing cancer outcomes disparities and diversifying clinical trial participation within SCRI’s combined research network of over 1,300 physicians at over 250 locations in 24 states across the U.S.

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations’ Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food and Drug Administration is scheduled to consider an appropriations bill to fund the Department of Agriculture, FDA, and other related agencies for FY2024. The bill includes several provisions that would keep FDA from fulfilling its duty to protect public health and threaten its efforts to combat the harmful impacts of tobacco.
Evanthia Galanis was elected group chair-elect of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology at the 2023 Alliance Spring Virtual Group Meeting May 5. Galanis will take office in November 2023 and will serve a six-year term.
Johns Hopkins Medicine received a $35 million gift from researcher, philanthropist, and race car driver Theodore Giovanis. Scientists will use the gift to study how cancer metastasizes through the body.
