Job details:

Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology

The University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, in partnership with Korn Ferry, invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology.

The University of Miami Health System (UHealth) delivers leading-edge patient care by the region’s best physicians, powered by the groundbreaking research of the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. As South Florida’s only university-based medical system, UHealth is a vital part of the community and is leading the next generation of health care. As one of the top National Institutes of Health-funded medical schools in Florida, the Miller School of Medicine is at the vanguard of cutting-edge discoveries. From their leading genetics/genomics program to their contributions in the fields of cellular therapeutics, cancer care, immune therapies, and much more, the Miller School is at the forefront of advances in translational medicine and clinical care. Home to more than 1,700 faculty members, 48 centers and institutes, 29 clinical and basic science departments, and an average annual class cohort of more than 200 students, the Miller School is making a global impact through innovative care, transformative discovery, and collaborative teaching and learning. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth and the Miller School of Medicine, is South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center and one of only five Cancer Centers of Excellence in the state of Florida.

An integral part of the Cancer Center, UHealth, and the Miller School of Medicine, is the DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery. The Department has grown to be one of the largest in the southeastern United States, and critical to their mission of providing high-quality clinical care with compassion, world-class surgical education, and leading-edge research towards new treatments and cures aimed at eradicating modern-day surgical diseases, is the recruitment of a new Chief to oversee the Division of Surgical Oncology.

Serving as the Division’s leader, the Chief of Surgical Oncology is responsible for all aspects of the Division, including leading and developing faculty, financial and operational management, and creating a welcoming and nurturing environment to support the success of all Division members. They will shape an overarching vision and provide strategic direction that spans the mission areas of research, patient care, education, and service, while representing the Division across the Department of Surgery, Miller School of Medicine, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, and UHealth. This new Division Chief will have the opportunity to further expand the Division with new faculty recruitments and is expected to continue to shape the Division for national recognition. Additionally, the Chief will serve as the Chief Surgical Officer for the specialty at Jackson Health System and the Chief of the Surgical Service for the specialty at the VAMC for clinical activities within that Institution.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Surgery, the ideal candidate will bring a proven track record in collaborative leadership, administrative experience, program development, research, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, and engagement across an academic health system. They will have earned an MD degree or equivalent, be board certified in general surgery, completed a surgical oncology fellowship, and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Florida. In addition, a strong record of research accomplishments, productivity, and peer-reviewed extramural funding, and a track record of program development and faculty and trainee recruitment and development is highly desirable. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Professor level at the Miller School of Medicine.
