UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (UPMC Hillman) seeks a dynamic Professor level faculty leader with demonstrated experience in community-engaged outreach, research and/or practice to support bidirectional engagement with community members, community organizations, and other stakeholders. The Associate Director for Population Science (AD for Pop Sci) will work closely with the Director, Deputy Directors, and other Associate Directors to coordinate a community outreach and engagement agenda for UPMC Hillman.

Located in the city of Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood, UPMC Hillman is an NCI-designated comprehensive matrix cancer center focused on state-of-the-art cancer research, training the next generation of cancer researchers, and community outreach. In 2020, UPMC Hillman celebrated its 34th anniversary and the renewal of its 5-year NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) that resulted in Hillman Research Administration scoring in the ‘Exceptional’ range and qualifying UPMC Hillman for a 2-year merit extension. UPMC Hillman serves 29 western PA counties serving nearly 5 million individuals and provides unique opportunities to collaborate with clinical and translational research programs involved in cancer patient care, including the University of Pittsburgh, Magee-Women’s Research Institute and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. UPMC Hillman has over 330 members, 7 scientific programs, 10 CCSG-supported shared resources, $110 million of peer-reviewed cancer-relevant funding with over $60 million from NCI, and an institutional funding base greater than $150 million.

The Associate Director for Population Science at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is both the scientific and administrative leader for fostering bi-directional communication and authentic engagement between HCC members and relevant stakeholders on the topic of population science related to cancer. The AD for Pop Sci reports directly to UPMC Hillman Director and serves as a member of the UPMC Hillman Senior Leadership Team. This leader is responsible for establishing a vision and mission for Population Science that is co-developed in collaboration with other leaders and aligns with the UPMC Hillman Strategic Plan. The following are responsibilities of the AD for Pop Sci.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the long-term vision, goals, policies, and procedures, to support the mandatory population science component of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG).
  • Implement strategies, tactics, and metrics to accomplish population science goals as described in the CCSG application.
  • Monitor and evaluate Population Science activities and progress for efficacy and alignment with UPMC Hillman Strategic Plan and identify and implement alternative initiatives as needed.
    • Recruiting additional scientists to broaden breadth and depth of population science at UPMC Hillman.
    • Advocate for post-doctoral positions in population sciences to feed the pipeline for UPMC Hillman.
  • Foster inter- and intra-programmatic transdisciplinary and team science that features population science.
  • Advocate for institutional and community-based infrastructure and resources to ensure the success of population science at UPMC Hillman (e.g.; endowed chairs, shared space for population science members, pilot funds)
  • Monitor the needs of populations scientists with an eye toward what shared resources might benefit the program members.
  • Respond effectively to the EAB feedback about population science at UPMC Hillman
  • Appropriately partner with COE ​leadership to ensure population science research is responsive to catchment relevant concerns.
  • Partner with the Associate Directors for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Cancer Education, Training and Cancer Research Training and Education Coordination to advance plans to enhance diversity and expand the biomedical cancer research workforce and leadership.

Successful candidates must have a MD, PhD, or equivalent, an exceptional scientific research record encompassing translational or population-based research using state-of-the-art approaches evidenced by scholarly productivity (e.g., grants, publications), a productive academic record of cancer-related research relevant to community outreach and/or engagement, and minimum of 8+ years’ experience in a Cancer Center or university setting. Prior leadership experience related to strategic planning, program implementation and/or evaluation is preferred with excellent written and oral communication, computer, people management, and interpersonal skills.
