Oliver Bogler named director of NCI Center for Cancer Training

Oliver Bogler was named director of the NCI Center for Cancer Training. He will focus on NCI training and career development programs to develop cancer research through a scientifically-integrated approach.

Bogler most recently served as chief operating officer of the ECHO Institute at the University of New Mexico, which focuses on democratizing expert knowledge to improve services to the underserved (The Cancer Letter, May 31, 2019).

At NCI, Bogler replaces Susan Perkins, who served as acting deputy director of the Center for Cancer Training.

Bogler has held faculty appointments at Virginia Commonwealth University, Henry Ford Hospital, and the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he also served as director of basic research for the Brain Tumor Center. His research focuses on EGFR signaling and novel platinum compounds in glioblastoma.

In 2010, Bogler became MD Anderson’s vice president for Global Academic Programs and managed a network of 35 sister institutions in 22 countries. In 2011, he was also appointed senior vice president for academic affairs.

 

University of Maryland joins Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium

The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center has joined the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium.

The consortium was created in 2013 to transform the conduct of cancer research through collaborative, hypothesis-driven, highly translational oncology trials that leverage the scientific and clinical expertise of Big Ten universities. Its membership now includes the cancer centers of all Big Ten universities.
