Willey joins Inova Schar Cancer Institute’s breast care team

Shawna C. Willey was named Peterson Chair of Breast Cancer Research at Inova Schar Institute, where she will lead breast surgical research and recommend new technologies and treatment in breast cancer.

The position is endowed by the Peterson Family Foundation.

“Dr. Willey promises to make an immediate impact at Inova Schar, bringing her expertise, research and mentorship to our exceptional breast cancer team and our patients,” John Deeken, president of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute, said in a statement.

Prior to joining Inova Schar, Willey was director of MedStar’s Regional Breast Health Program, chief of surgery at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, and a member of the Breast Cancer Program at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Willey is chairman of the board and former President of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is a pioneer in the field of nipple-sparing mastectomy.


Petrelli receives Medical Society of Delaware award

Nicholas J. Petrelli, the Bank of America endowed medical director of ChristianaCare’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, received the Tilton Award from the Medical Society of Delaware for his work to decrease Delaware’s cancer mortality rate and improve the state’s cancer care.

The award is named after James Tilton, the first United States Army Surgeon General and first president of the Medical Society of Delaware. Petrelli received the award Oct. 10.

Petrelli’s leadership and collaboration with partners across the state have helped Delaware to achieve reductions in the cancer mortality rate that are double the national average.
