NCI advisors approve 23 concepts at joint NCAB/BSA meeting

The NCI Board of Scientific Advisors has approved 23 new and reissue concepts: five Requests for Applications/Requests For Proposals and 18 PARs, program announcements reviewed in the institute.

The following six concepts, presented at a June 10 joint meeting with the National Cancer Advisory Board, were approved:

Clinical Trials Information and Management and Support Contract Proposal (New RFP)

The CTIMS is designed to provide project management, organizational and information management support to NCI-sponsored clinical trials, related scientific programs, and their scientific evaluation process.

The RFA was submitted by the Clinical Investigations Branch at the NCI Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program.

The CTIMS contract supports the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis and the Coordinating Center for Clinical Trials. The intended outcomes of the contract are to facilitate efficient and effective development, review, and completion of NCI-supported clinical trials and related scientific projects.

The project management for CTIMS supports new clinical trials initiatives by:

Using project teams to involve extramural investigators in CTEP drug development planning: PMs for 19 early-phase project teams lead to 78 Letters of Intent

Increasing ETCTN accrual in disease-specific clinics:

Creating and analyzing over 30 surveys to ETCTN investigators to assess accrual feasibility

Developing and maintaining web-based tools for physicians to identify appropriate disease-specific trials

These initiatives contributed to a 100% increase in ETCTN trial accrual over two years

Managing clinical trial accrual:

Managing and monitoring over 50 early-phase Corrective Action Plans to slow accruing trials
