UAB Cancer Center receives $30 million naming gift from O’Neal Industries

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center has received a $30 million gift from O’Neal Industries Inc., a family-owned global business based in Birmingham.
As a result, the center will be known as the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Craft O’Neal, chairman and CEO of O’Neal Industries, the largest family-owned network of metals service centers and component manufacturers in the U.S., is a member of the cancer center’s advisory board and its president elect.
“We have some pretty aggressive strategic hiring that we need to do,” Michael J. Birrer, director of the cancer center, said to The Cancer Letter. “We’re trying to build our laboratory research bench a little bit deeper. We’re going into a core grant renewal in about a year and seven months. Then, we have some needs on the hematology-oncology side too.”
Birrer said the money will also help the cancer center fund its Deep South Network for Cancer Control, an important piece of its “outreach and engagement” mission that also addresses new NCI requirements for designation.
