Douglas Lowy to remain deputy director of NCI as Sharpless takes over

NCI Acting Director Douglas Lowy will continue to serve as deputy director of the institute after Norman “Ned” Sharpless, director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Wellcome Distinguished Professor in Cancer Research, is sworn in as the next NCI director.

Sharpless’s appointment was announced June 9. It is not publicly known when Sharpless will be starting in his new role.

“He has been successful at everything that he has done in his professional career, and there is every reason to believe that he will be highly successful as the next NCI director,” Lowy said June 20 at a joint meeting of the Board of Scientific Advisors and the National Cancer Advisory Board. “We are looking forward to working really closely together to make sure that we do right by all of you.”

Congressional appropriators are unlikely to cut the NIH budget over the next few years, Lowy said.

“Both Chairman [Tom] Cole [(R-OK)] and Chairman [Roy] Blunt [(R-MO)] made an oral commitment to continue to provide sustained increases to the NIH over the next few years,” Lowy said.
